Jack Bruce’s album Shadows in the Air was released on July 9th, 2001. He had been working on it over two years in New York. Shadows in the Air became a great solo album of the famous bass guitarist. Bruce earned his legendary status from his writing and playing skills in the world's finest super group, Cream. His legendary guitar playing buoys this set of mid-tempo, at times Latin tunes. Some of the songs are new and written by Bruce, and six are remakes of his classics. Longtime Cream fans will be excited by the inclusion of sparkling new versions of "Sunshine Of Your Love" and "White Room", both featuring Eric Clapton, who revisited the classic riffs of these landmark songs. He's joined on various tracks by Eric Clapton, Dr. John, Gary Moore, Vernon Reid, and, for percolating conga rhythms on three tracks, Changuito Luis Quintana.

Bruce’s son Malcolm helped him with the horn arrangements in this album, and it was not the first time when father worked with the son. “Malcolm is a guitarist and keyboard player, as well as an excellent arranger” – Bruce said. With other musicians he had been playing for 17 years.

The first record that Bruce did in this style was called Desire Develops an Edge, very much a Latin jazz-fusion record which was done 17 years ago. He’s made several records with these guys, playing their music, and at once he asked them to help him with his own album. He definitely revisited Sunshine Of Your Love and White Room, and he had two ballads that he had written, Dark Heart and Heart Quake. Those are four songs that Bruce knew he wanted to do. They went into the studio and cut the two ballads with him playing piano and singing live, with Milton Cardona on percussion. They started to talk about what else we wanted to play, because although the musicians on Shadows In the Air are Latin musicians, they grew up loving rock music. They knew his solo records, they obviously knew the Cream records. It was their idea to include Out In the Fields (West, Bruce, Laing).

In this album Bruce used an amp in the studio and he also went direct. The direct sound is pretty astounding. He didn’t use any valve (tube) preamps or anything, he just found that the direct signal from his Warwick is so good.

So in 2001 Bruce reappeared with his most successful band of recent times featuring Bernie Worrel, Vernon Reid of Living Colour on guitar and Kip Hanrahan's three-piece Latin rhythm section. Hanrahan also produced the accompanying album Shadows in the Air, which included a reunion with Eric Clapton on a new version of Sunshine of Your Love. The band released another studio album, More Jack than God, in 2003, and a live DVD, Live at Canterbury Fayre.
